Brief Thoughts on the film:

Is this film truly being made because Mr. Gibson has a genuine desire for people to come to know Christ?

And should we as Christians support this film?

It is very easy to be skeptical about the motives behind such a film. Especially after all the people who use God's name to just make money.

So far Mel Gibson has made statements that have led me to believe that his desire is to simply portray the events historically and biblically..

"This is a movie about love, hope, faith, and forgiveness. He [Jesus] died for all mankind, suffered for all of us. It's time to get back to that basic message. The world has gone nuts. We could all use a little more love, faith, hope, and forgiveness."         Mel Gibson

I have to conclude that Mel has been touched by the life of Christ to the point where he wants others to see it. His desire is genuine enough that he has paid millions of dollars from his own money to complete the film.

He has also humbled himself to other men who have dedicated their whole lives to the study of the person of Christ to make sure as to the historical and Biblical accuracy of the film; this includes many evangelical pastors.

However, I still think this film should be approached with caution because of Mel's "traditionalist" influences. See it first before you make a judgment on it. Think for yourself and compare the presentation to the inspired texts of scripture. Realize that even at its very best, no one can ever represent Christ as he truly was; fully God and Fully man better than the scriptures, and understand that this film is at best only an artistic commentary on events that really happened.

The main thing that distinguishes the Roman Catholic Doctrines and Biblical Christianity is  the belief in Transubstantiation (where you have to literally eat Christ to be saved by the Transforming of Substances) vs. the Belief that only Christ alone can save a soul apart from any merit (the definition of Grace (Sola Gratia) by his atoning work on the Cross (Sola  Christus) by the enactment of Faith (Con Fide) as described in the Only Sacred Scriptures (Sola Scriptura) (see eph 2:8).

If Mr. Gibson is a full "traditionalist" as some say he is and adheres to the doctrine of transubstantiation, he does not truly understand the unmerited favor of God, which would mean that he holds to a works based salvation- which is contrary to the sacred scriptures.

My hope is that people will not use the events that occurred for their own gain by twisting them to fit doctrines which will only enslave people to a "works based" salvation instead a grace based salvation.  Christ work on the Cross Alone can atone and is "once for all" sufficient sacrifice. A salvation which is motivated by God's unmerited favor is the faith that will once gain turn the world upside down.

Lastly, I have found that the most important questions to ask to know whether or not to watch any movie are:

Am I closer to God after watching the film?
Have I truly submitted to God as not only as my Savior but also as my Lord?

So to answer the second question. Watch it first and decide if you should support it.

"What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice." Phil 1:18

Excerpt from the Foreword by Mel Gibson:

"People often ask me why I wanted to make a film about the Passion of Our Lord. My usual response is that I've wanted to make this film for over ten years, which is true. That seems to answer the question for most. The reality, of course, is more complex, and had its genesis during a time in which I found myself trapped with feelings of terrible, isolated emptiness...

It was during this period of meditation and prayer that I first conceived the idea of making a film about The Passion...

. . .   My new hope is that The Passion of The Christ will help many more people recognize the power of His love and let Him help them to save their own lives."
